Symbols of Thanksgiving: the Pumpkin Pie

What do you know about Thanksgiving?

It is a tradition birth with Pilgrim Fathers (the early European settlers of the Plymouth Colony), who wanted to thank God for setting them free from all their troubles. Nowadays, it is still celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November and it represents one of the most important American festivals.
Even if Americans are situated in other countries (e.g. for traveling reasons) they always celebrate Thanksgiving.

What happens during this tradition?
On this day, many American families get a reunion and thank God for their well-being and their food.

Food is an essential part of Thanksgiving: according to tradition they cook many dishes such as roast turkey with potatoes, sweetcorn, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie as dessert.

Pumpkin Pie (10 servings)

Ingredients for the crust:
1 or 1/2 cups of flour plus more for rolling
1 tablespoon of sugar
pinch of salt
6 tablespoon of butter cut into pieces
6 tablespoon of water
1 egg yolk

Ingredients for the filling:
1 or 1/2 cups of cooked pumpkin
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
2 tablespoon of melted butter
2 cups of cream
4 eggs, beaten

Place flour, sugar and salt in a bowl and mix them.
Afterwards, add butter and cut it into dry ingredients with fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Then, add egg yolk, water, 1 tablespoon at a time, stirring with fork in between until dough forms a ball. Wrap and refrigerate it for 20 minutes.
Bake pumpkin until it becomes soft. Then mix it with sugar, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Add cream, butter and eggs and combine the ingredients. Chill this mix for 20-30 minutes.
Finally, put the filling over the prepared pie. Bake at 325 degrees for about 40 minutes.
Serve it and enjoy your meal!
